Just not too much care – What makes hair really beautiful

The cosmetics industry offers many products for hair care: Not only shampoos, conditioners and cures promise a shiny and healthy mane. Hairspray, foam and wax should also provide an extra portion of care in addition to the firming effect. But too much of it is not good either.

“We often overdo it with hair,” says skin and hair specialist Dr. Madeleine Schunter, who is a member of the Professional Association of German Dermatologists (BVDD). “Whoever does too much risks the health of the scalp – and in the worst case this can lead to hair loss.”

Hair breakage due to too many cosmetic measures

Too hot blow-drying, styling and too much dyeing, tinting and perming not only upset the natural protective acid mantle of the scalp. Constantly stressed hair also breaks off more quickly.

Do not treat hair too often

But which is the right one? “I advise my patients to wash their hair two to three times a week and choose a pH-neutral shampoo. Between washes, the scalp has enough time to regenerate,” says Schunter.

A household remedy ensures beautiful hair

And instead of resorting to many different care products, it is sometimes enough to use a household remedy: “Olive oil is the best thing you can do for your hair”, Schunter, who also recommends the oil to her patients, is convinced. With this care the hair becomes smooth and shiny. Olive oil is ideal especially in the fight against dandruff.

Olive oil can reduce hair loss

In addition, hair loss can sometimes be alleviated with the oil, as long as it has no genetic causes, as the hair expert knows. The application is simple: once or twice a week, apply a little olive oil to the scalp, massage in, put a shower cap on the head and let it work overnight. Wash your hair as usual the next morning.

Caution with alcohol and silicones

Those suffering from sensitive scalps should also consider the use of hairspray, wax and foam. If the products come into contact with the skin during incorporation, allergies and eczema may result, depending on the ingredients.

“When buying, make sure that the product is free of alcohol and silicones, because these additives dry out the scalp and can promote dandruff and lead to itching and redness,” says the dermatologist’s advice.

Fragrance allergies increase

Also with vegetable additives such as marigold, chamomile and arnica caution is necessary due to the high allergy potential, likewise with perfume. “Fragrance allergies in particular are increasing more and more,” says Schunter. If irritations occur on the scalp, it is best to make an appointment with a dermatologist and take the products used with you for a talk.

Hair loss? Take a look at the package insert

But hair care is not always to blame when hair and scalp cause problems. Certain medications, including some antihypertensives and blood thinners, can also be associated with hair loss, as the expert knows.

Anyone who loses more hair as a result of taking medication should also discuss this with a doctor and ask for possible alternatives.

The hair roots need vitamins

Nutrition also contributes significantly to healthy hair. “Do not eat one-sided,” warns Schunter. “The hair needs variety, otherwise the hair roots are not supplied sufficiently with nutrients. A balanced diet with lots of vegetables and fruit is ideal for the hair.

“Women, eat meat”

But protein, such as yoghurt, quark or fish, also strengthens the hair. And sometimes it has to be a piece of meat, the expert points out: “Iron deficiency always leads to hair loss in women. Especially women who do not eat meat and do not replenish their memory in any other way quickly have a problem. ”

For example, iron and zinc deficiency are among the most frequent causes of light spots in women, along with hereditary hair loss, as Schunter emphasizes. Increased alcohol consumption can also lead to hair loss due to liver damage.
